An 18th century treasure exquisitely restored by renowned interior designer Jacques Grange, Palazzo Margherita offers a stunning backdrop for a magical getaway to Basilicata, Southern Italy’s undiscovered and unspoiled destination. Set in the charming village of Bernalda, the town where Francis Ford Coppola’s grandfather was raised, the palazzo delights guests with palatial rooms and suites, delicious authentic cuisine, numerous amenities, and hospitality so heartwarming that some visitors choose never to venture beyond the palazzo walls.
There are, however, countless offerings nearby whether you desire lingering over a beach picnic on the Ionian coast or exploring Matera, a not-to-miss UNESCO world-heritage site famous for its ancient “sassi” cave dwellings.
We invite you to imagine yourself spending these three memorable days at Palazzo Margherita and its neighboring best-kept secrets.

DAY ONE Rise early to bicycle or stroll through Bernalda to get a sense of place and enjoy a stunning sunrise over the valley below.
After breakfast, head to the recently discovered Crypt of the Original Sin, also known as the Lucanian “Sistine chapel.” You will never forget the stories behind the rupestrian paintings, told within the caves where the artists created these scenes dating back to the 9th century.
Then it’s off to Matera for a guided tour of the town presenting the history of the cave dwellings, suspected to be the first human settlements in Italy. Matera’s revitalization attracts artisans who showcase a range of jewelry, woodwork, and sculpture. The stone streets are alive with locals and visitors strolling, chatting, and dining al fresco in front of local cafés (though there are many fine restaurants where you can splurge on more formal fare).
After returning to Palazzo Margherita, consider enjoying tonight’s dinner in the salon, our opulent in-house cinema, and choose from several notable Italian films personally selected by Francis Ford Coppola. Dine on fresh pasta and bountiful regional fare while sipping wine found only in the Basilicata and Puglia regions.

DAY TWO Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the dine-in kitchen or courtyard as you anticipate today’s journey to Martina Franca, an ancient Baroque-style village. Stroll through piazzas and narrow cobblestone streets, then have lunch at one of the town’s several trattorias. Top it off with an ice cream affogato or espresso at Bar Tripoli, a staple of Martina Franca for over one hundred years.
Pass through the famous Valle d’Itria, scattered with cylindrical-styled homes known as “trulli.” Shop in Grottaglie for vibrant, hand-made ceramics to delight family and friends (or to keep for yourself)!
Return to Bernalda for dinner at Palazzo Margherita’s Cinecitta’ Bar and Café. Rub shoulders with the locals and dine from an impressive selection of pizzas, pastas, and regional dishes. Enjoy a leisurely stroll down the main Corso, joining with the locals in the traditional social ritual of the passeggiata, the evening walk.

DAY THREE After breakfast (perhaps in the hotel’s historic garden this time), visit the ghost town of Craco, an abandoned medieval village once inhabited by the Greeks. Take in the impressive vistas on the drive from the valley up to the hills of the village and experience the unique landscape that has been featured in many films.
Head back to Palazzo Margherita for lunch by the pool. Enjoy a refreshing swim followed by a siesta in the luxurious comfort of your room, or relax with a bath in a deep soaking tub supplied with exquisite bathing amenities from Santa Maria Novella.
Learn to make fresh pasta in a hands-on cooking course. Afterwards, the Chef will explain the best cooking methods for your freshly-made pasta. Once the demonstration is complete, relax with a special aperitif before finally savoring the delicious meal prepared during your course.
We delight in creating special experiences for our guests. The Coppolas first entered the world of resorts when they opened Blancaneaux Lodge, originally a family hideaway tucked in the mountains of Belize. They followed with Turtle Inn, a seafront Belize resort, and La Lancha, perched above Lake Petén Itzá in Guatemala near the Mayan ruins of Tikal. Each offers opportunity for adventure, retreat, or relaxation to individuals, couples, and families.
