In magic, playing cards speak. One illusionist asks a deck to whisper “trust me,” while another wants his cards to express his onstage persona or serve as cover for the workings of an illusion.
Card designers mostly ignored the design needs of magicians until 2007, when online community Ellusionist riffed dark on the traditional Bicycle Rider Backs with its Black Tigers. Justin Kamerer and theory11 released their bold Bicycle Guardians soon after. The revolution was underway; a creative explosion occurring at the intersection of design and magic.
