Sontule is a community in the Segovia mountains of Northern Nicaragua. Sontule’s citizens work in small-scale cooperatives, producing delicious, organic fair trade coffee that they sell on the international market. Life in Sontule is generally, good. However, when families wish to invest in the education of their children, it gets a bit tougher. Given that the closest secondary school is over 10 km away, those without horses are unable to get to and attend classes.
In an act of solidarity and friendship, KHC, together with people of Purple Hill, Ontario, made some infrastructure improvements to the existing local primary school, so it can double as a secondary school on weekends and evenings. Take a look at the online blog for photos and details of this great project.
